rust-performance

Guides Rust performance optimization. Use when profiling, benchmarking, reducing allocations, improving cache locality, choosing between rayon/async/threads, or applying SIMD/parallelism.

Performance Optimization

Layer 2: Design Choices

Core Question

What's the bottleneck, and is optimization worth it?

Before optimizing:

  • Have you measured? (Don't guess)
  • What's the acceptable performance target?
  • Will optimization add significant complexity?

Thinking Prompt

  1. Have you measured?

    • Profile first → flamegraph, perf
    • Benchmark → criterion, cargo bench
    • Identify actual hotspots
  2. What's the priority?

    • Algorithm (10x–1000x improvement)
    • Data structure (2x–10x)
    • Allocation reduction (2x–5x)
    • Cache optimization (1.5x–3x)
  3. What's the trade-off?

    • Complexity vs speed
    • Memory vs CPU
    • Latency vs throughput

Optimization Priority

1. Algorithm choice (10x - 1000x)
2. Data structure (2x - 10x)
3. Allocation reduction (2x - 5x)
4. Cache optimization (1.5x - 3x)
5. SIMD/Parallelism (2x - 8x)

Common Techniques

TechniqueWhenHow
Pre-allocationKnown sizeVec::with_capacity(n)
Avoid cloningHot pathsUse references or Cow<T>
Batch operationsMany small opsCollect then process
SmallVecUsually smallsmallvec::SmallVec<[T; N]>
Inline buffersFixed-size dataArrays over Vec

Tooling

ToolPurpose
cargo benchMicro-benchmarks
criterionStatistical benchmarks
perf / flamegraphCPU profiling
heaptrackAllocation tracking
valgrind / cachegrindCache analysis

Common Mistakes

MistakeWhy WrongBetter
Optimize without profilingWrong targetProfile first
Benchmark in debug modeMeaningless resultsAlways --release
Use LinkedListCache unfriendlyVec or VecDeque
Hidden .clone() in loopUnnecessary allocsUse references
Premature optimizationWasted effortMake it correct first

Anti-Patterns

Anti-PatternWhy BadBetter
Clone to avoid lifetimesPerformance costProper ownership
Box everythingIndirection costStack allocation when possible
HashMap for small setsOverheadVec with linear search
String concat in loopO(n²)String::with_capacity or write!

Add an iOS App Clip target to an Expo app. Use when the user mentions App Clip, AASA, apple-app-site-association, appclips, smart app banner, or wants to ship a lightweight iOS Clip invoked from a URL alongside their parent app.

Apple's approach to interface design and fluid, physical motion, translated for the web. Use when building or reviewing gesture-driven UI, spring animations, drag/swipe/sheet interactions, momentum and interruptible transitions, translucent materials and depth, typography (optical sizing, tracking, leading), reduced-motion, or the design foundations (feedback, spatial consistency, restraint) behind Apple-style interfaces.

Derive and implement first-principles audio-coupled haptic and kinetic UI feedback. Use when designing, reviewing, or coding haptics/audio for mobile apps, native iOS/Android, React Native/Expo, SwiftUI, games, detent pickers, toggles, sliders, page curls, scroll gestures, wallet/signature flows, Solana transactions, backend/realtime state changes, confirmations, settlements, and semantic UI events where feedback should follow signal math instead of ad hoc vibration calls.

Babysit a GitHub pull request during a user-approved monitoring window by polling review comments, CI checks/workflow runs, and mergeability state. Diagnose failures, retry likely flaky failures up to 3 times, auto-fix/push branch-related issues when appropriate, and report fresh review feedback. Use when the user asks Codex to monitor a PR, watch CI, handle review comments, or keep an eye on failures and feedback on an open PR.
