Overview

Falcon (Technology Innovation Institute, UAE) is an open-model family known for early open-weight leadership (the original Falcon 40B/180B made waves) and continued development including multilingual variants and efficient architectures. Falcon represents the Gulf region's significant investment in open AI — models trained at serious scale and released openly.

For builders, Falcon is a solid open-model option to include in evaluations, particularly where multilingual coverage matters or where you want diversity in your open-model portfolio beyond the US/China labs. The models run on standard inference stacks and are hosted by major providers.

The honest positioning: Falcon is a credible open family that deserves a slot in your benchmarks. Evaluate it like any open model — on your task, your data, your economics.

When to use

  • Open-model evaluations where you want lab diversity.
  • Multilingual applications (Falcon's language coverage is a consideration).
  • Self-hosting open models on standard stacks.
  • Fine-tuning open base models.
  • Research on open-model comparisons.
  • Applications valuing openly-licensed models from diverse sources.

Core concepts

  • Model family evolution: from the early 40B/180B releases through newer generations with architectural updates. Prefer current generations; benchmark them.
  • Open licensing: released under permissive open licenses (Apache 2.0 for key releases) — fewer licensing complications than some families. Still verify per release.
  • Multilingual variants: models with expanded language coverage. Test your specific languages — coverage claims need validation.
  • Efficient architectures: attention and architecture choices aimed at training and inference efficiency. Relevant for self-hosting economics.
  • Standard-stack compatibility: runs on vLLM, TGI, llama.cpp, and major provider APIs. No exotic deployment requirements.
  • Scale options: various sizes across generations. Benchmark the size ladder for your task.
  • Instruction-tuned variants: tuned versions for chat and assistants.
  • Community and support: growing ecosystem; provider hosting is broad enough for easy API evaluation.

Practical workflow

  1. Include in open-model benchmarks. Add current Falcon generations to your standard evaluation alongside Llama, Qwen, Mistral.
  2. Test your languages. For multilingual use: per-language evals on the relevant Falcon variants.
  3. Benchmark the size ladder. Find the smallest adequate size for your task.
  4. Verify licensing. Confirm the license for your chosen release and use case — permissive history, but check.
  5. Evaluate deployment. API benchmarking first; self-hosting economics at volume second.
  6. Consider fine-tuning. If a Falcon base fits your task well, it's a fine-tuning candidate like any open model.
  7. Track new releases. The family continues evolving; re-benchmark new generations on your schedule.

Checklist for Falcon in production:

  • Current generation benchmarked against alternatives on your evals.
  • Languages tested per your requirements.
  • License verified per release.
  • Size right-sized via ladder testing.
  • Deployment economics modeled.

Common pitfalls

  • Legacy anchoring. Judging the family by early releases instead of current generations. Evaluate what's current.
  • Excluding from benchmarks. Defaulting to US/China labs without testing Falcon. Lab diversity in evaluation is cheap and informative.
  • Language assumptions. Assuming multilingual claims cover your languages well. Test each one.
  • License complacency. "Open" history doesn't replace checking the specific release's terms.
  • No size-ladder testing. Picking a size by reputation rather than measurement.
  • Ecosystem thinness. Weaker community fine-tune ecosystem than Llama — factor into build-vs-fine-tune decisions.
  • Static evaluation. One benchmark two years ago isn't a current opinion. Re-evaluate per generation.
  • Deployment afterthought. Choosing the model before confirming hosting availability and economics. Check both.
